Wisdom tooth removal in Kénitra

Not every wisdom tooth causes trouble. When they come through at an angle, stay impacted or cause repeated infections, removing them becomes necessary. At Dr Fatima Azelmat's practice in Kénitra, that decision is made on a radiograph — never on principle.

  • Decision based on a radiographic assessment, not on reflex
  • Removal under local anaesthetic, impacted teeth included
  • 3D imaging when the root sits close to the nerve

Do they really have to come out?

No, not as a matter of course. A wisdom tooth that is well positioned, fully through and cleanable has no reason to be removed. Taking out a healthy, functional tooth achieves nothing.

Removal is called for when the tooth is causing trouble, or is about to. The decision follows an examination and a radiograph — see our article: wisdom tooth removal, indications and recovery.

When removal is indicated

  • Repeated pericoronitis — the gum partly covering the tooth becomes infected, swells and hurts. This is the most common reason.
  • An impacted or partly impacted tooth that will never come through properly.
  • Decay on the wisdom tooth or on the molar next to it, often out of the brush’s reach.
  • Pushing at an angle against the neighbouring tooth, with a risk of resorption.
  • A cyst or a lesion visible on the radiograph.
  • Before orthodontic treatment, when there is not enough room.

The assessment before surgery

A panoramic radiograph shows the position of the tooth, how impacted it is and its relationship with the structures around it.

When the root appears close to the inferior alveolar nerve, 3D Cone Beam imaging is taken. It locates the nerve to the millimetre and lets the procedure be adapted. That is what separates a planned extraction from an improvised one.

How the removal is done

  1. Local anaesthetic. The procedure is painless. You stay awake; the area is numb.
  2. Access. For a tooth that is through, the removal is direct. For an impacted tooth, the gum is opened and a little bone released.
  3. Removal. An impacted tooth is often sectioned into two or three pieces: it can then come out through a smaller opening, so less bone is disturbed. That heals faster — it is not more serious.
  4. Sutures. A few stitches close the gum. They come out a week later, or dissolve on their own.

Allow 20 to 45 minutes depending on difficulty. If anxiety is what holds you back, see: pain-free dental anaesthesia and conscious sedation with nitrous oxide.

Recovery, honestly

The first 48 to 72 hours are the most noticeable: a swollen cheek, difficulty opening your mouth, sometimes a bruise. That is normal and it settles.

What genuinely helps:

  • Cold on the cheek on day one, in 15-minute stretches.
  • Painkillers as soon as the anaesthetic wears off, without waiting for the pain to set in.
  • Lukewarm, soft food for the first few days. Nothing hot, no straws.
  • No tobacco. It is the leading cause of dry socket — a painful inflammation of the socket that shows up around day three.
  • Gentle brushing around the area, without avoiding it entirely.

Pain that increases instead of easing after day three is not normal: call the practice.

Why see Dr Fatima Azelmat

A dental surgeon oriented towards oral surgery, Dr Azelmat plans every extraction on imaging and does not operate on a tooth that does not need it. When the tooth sits close to the nerve, the Cone Beam settles it before the scalpel — not during.

Frequently asked questions

Does wisdom tooth removal hurt?
The procedure itself is painless: it is done under local anaesthetic. It is the recovery you feel — swelling and discomfort for 48 to 72 hours, managed with cold and painkillers taken as soon as the anaesthetic wears off.
Do all four wisdom teeth have to come out?
No, not on principle. A tooth that is well positioned, fully through and cleanable has no reason to be removed. We take out the ones causing trouble or about to, and the decision is made on a radiograph.
How long does recovery take?
Swelling peaks at 48 hours and then subsides. Most patients are back to normal within 3 to 5 days. Pain that increases after day three is not normal and warrants a call to the practice.
Can all four be taken out in one visit?
It is possible in some cases, but we often prefer two visits, one per side: you can still chew on one side and the recovery is easier to live with. We decide together based on your situation.
Is smoking a problem after the removal?
Yes, it is the leading cause of dry socket — a painful inflammation of the socket that appears around day three. Stopping, even for a few days around the procedure, genuinely changes the recovery.
