What is a dental veneer?

A veneer is a thin ceramic shell (about 0.3 to 0.7 mm) bonded to the visible face of a tooth to transform its appearance. It corrects colour, shape, length and minor misalignment without touching the inner structure of the tooth. It is a precise esthetic treatment: well indicated and well made, it looks very natural. To go further, see our article: ceramic dental veneers.

When are veneers indicated?

Veneers mainly address esthetic concerns:

  • Discoloured teeth that no longer respond to whitening (whitening is always considered first when it is enough).
  • Irregular shapes, worn or slightly chipped teeth.
  • Small gaps (diastemas) or minor misalignment that does not require orthodontics.

They do not suit every situation: on a heavily damaged or root-treated tooth, a crown is often more appropriate. The choice is made at the assessment.

The digital smile design

Before any preparation, Dr Azelmat creates a digital smile design (Digital Smile Design) from photos and a digital impression. You preview the proposed shape and shade, and the project is approved only once it suits you. This ensures a predictable result, designed for your face.

Step by step

  1. Assessment and design. Examination of the teeth and gums, photos, digital impression and smile design.
  2. Minimal preparation. A very thin layer of enamel is reshaped to receive the veneer; in some cases no preparation is needed.
  3. Impression and temporaries. The final impression is taken; temporary veneers may be placed.
  4. Fabrication. The veneers are made from custom ceramic, shade by shade.
  5. Bonding. They are tried in, then permanently bonded, and the bite is checked.

Veneers, crowns or whitening: how to choose?

  • Whitening lightens healthy teeth: the simplest option when only colour is a concern.
  • Veneers cover the visible surface to correct colour and shape, without covering the whole tooth.
  • A crown fully covers a damaged or root-treated tooth. For heavily restored teeth, inlays/onlays are sometimes preferred.

Results, longevity and care

Well cared for, ceramic veneers last many years. Ceramic resists staining well. Care is the same as for natural teeth: brushing, floss, regular scaling and check-ups. If you grind your teeth at night, a protective nightguard is advised to preserve the bonds.

Why consult Dr Fatima Azelmat

Dr Azelmat favours natural, measured esthetics: the most conservative preparation possible, quality ceramic and a project approved together before acting. If another solution is more appropriate (whitening, crown, orthodontics), she explains it clearly rather than multiplying veneers.

Frequently asked questions

Do the teeth have to be filed down for veneers?
Preparation is minimal: only a very thin layer of enamel is sometimes reshaped to receive the veneer. In favourable cases no preparation is needed. It is far less invasive than a crown.
Do veneers look natural?
Yes. Ceramic reproduces the translucency of enamel, and both shape and shade are defined with you through the digital smile design before fabrication. The goal is a harmonious result suited to your face.
How long do veneers last?
Well cared for, ceramic veneers last many years. Their longevity depends on hygiene, regular check-ups and protection against night grinding where relevant.
Veneer or crown: what is the difference?
A veneer covers only the visible face of a broadly healthy tooth, for esthetic purposes. A crown fully covers a damaged or root-treated tooth, to rebuild it. The choice is made at the assessment based on the state of the tooth.
Isn't whitening enough?
When only colour is a concern on healthy teeth, whitening is offered first because it is simpler and less invasive. Veneers are indicated when shape, alignment or staining that does not respond to whitening must also be corrected.
